Synopsis[]

Ragnar and Ivar plot against the Saxons and reach a new level of understanding. King Aelle can not hide his pleasure when Ragnar arrives in a cage and shows no mercy.

Plot[]

King Ecbert has arranged a ship to take Ivar home. Ragnar asks Ecbert to speak with Ivar alone and say goodbye. Ragnar tells Ivar he will be handed over to Aelle and will die. Ragnar tells Ivar to avenge his death and take revenge on Ecbert. Before he departs, Ragnar tells Ivar to be ruthless. Before he is caged, Ragnar gives Athelstan's cross to Alfred, and tells Ecbert that in the end, Athelstan chose Christ. On the road, Ragnar has visions of his younger days and a discussion with the Seer, where he denounces his belief in the gods. Ragnar arrives in Northumbria and is tortured by Aelle. Ecbert secretly travels to Northumbria to attend Ragnar's execution. Ragnar tells those in attendance that he dies without apology and welcomes death. He says he will wait for his sons in Valhalla, to hear stories of their triumphs. Ragnar is then dropped into a pit of snakes where he dies. Ivar arrives in Kattegat to tell Ubbe and Sigurd that Ragnar is dead, after Ecbert handed him over to Aelle. Ubbe and Sigurd then tell Ivar that their mother was killed by Lagertha. Across the fjord, a longship carrying a black cloaked figure, missing his right eye, approaches.

Trivia[]

  • Gyda, Aslaug, Floki, Athelstan, Bjorn, and Rollo appear in Ragnar's flashbacks. Lagertha appears in Ragnar's flashbacks and physically in this episode.
  • Ragnar becomes the embodiment of Odin.
  • This episode is the highest rated of the series.
  • Most of the Northumbrian soldiers in this episode were played by extras who usually play Vikings. Many of them felt strange taking part in the torture of their "leader."
  • Travis Fimmel said this was a very difficult episode because of the weather conditions. It was very cold and sometimes raining on the set.
  • In real life, Ragnar's last words were, "And my sons will avenge me."
  • Michael Hirst, the writer and creator of the series, wanted to kill Ragnar at the end of Season 1, but seeing the good interpretation of Travis Fimmel and the public response to the character he decided to continue Ragnar's story.
  • The poem Ragnar recites before being dropped in the snake pit is a shortened rephrasing of Kraukamál.
  • The words sung as the snake pit is opened are directly lifted from the 12th century story "Ragnarssona þáttr" ("Tale of Ragnar's Sons").
  • In Norse mythology, the death of the god Baldr instigates the beginning of Ragnarok, the war to end all things. Similarly, the death of Ragnar brings the vengeance of his sons and the Great Heathen Army. Another interesting parallel is that Baldr is killed by his blind brother Hod after being tricked by Loki. Ragnar is brought to the place of his death by a blind man who unwittingly begins the "war to end all things."
