A Jarl is a title held by a territorial chieftain in Viking Age Scandinavia, ranking only below a Konung (king). Originally, the word simply referred to the ruling class, above karls (free men) and thralls (slaves). Eventually it developed into a title roughly similar to a duke.
Jarl is an Norse cognate of Earl.
