Katheryn Winnick (born Katrusia Anna Vinitska; December 17, 1977) is a Canadian film and television actress, director, and producer. She portrayed Lagertha in the History Channel drama series Vikings.

Biography[]

Winnick completed her university education at York University in Toronto. She studied acting at New York's William Esper Studio. She is best known for her roles in Amusement (2008), Bones (2010), and A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III.

In 2013, she appeared in the comedy film The Fix, with Kurt Russell and Matt Dillon.

Winnick directed an episode of Vikings that debuted in 2020. Her portrayal of Lagertha has earned her several impressive accolades, including a Women's Image Network award for Best Actress in a Drama Series (2018), a nomination for a Critic's Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Performance by a Lead Dramatic Actress (2014), Best Actress in a Drama Series by the Women's Image Network nomination (2014, 2015, and 2016), and a Golden Maple Award nomination for Best Actress in a TV Series.

Winnick starred, co-executive produced, and directed an episode of the Netflix series Wu Assassins that premiered in 2019.

  • Ukrainian is Katheryn's first language. She began speaking English when she was eight years old. She speaks five languages: English, Ukrainian, French, Russian, and Italian.
  • She began studying martial arts at seven, and earned her first black belt at thirteen. She opened her first dojo at sixteen, and it has since expanded to three locations in Toronto and New York.
  • By age 21, this dojo has expanded to three locations.
  • Her original family name, Winnicki, means "winemaker."
  • She holds a 3rd-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and a 2nd-degree black belt in Karate. She won silver medals at the Canadian National Tae Kwon Do finals.
  • She is a licensed bodyguard.
  • Her brother, Adam Winnick, had roles on Vikings. He played an uncredited Viking Warrior, an uncredited Black Dane Viking, and Rangvald.
  • When asked, linguists determined that Winnick and Lucy Martin (Ingrid) speak the Old Norse dialogue the worst.
