In 535 AD, Sicily became a Byzantine province after the Eastern Roman Empire, also known as Byzantium, successfully fought back the Vandals. In 740 AD, Emperor Leo III the Isaurian, meaning Leo III the Syrian, transferred Sicily from the jurisdiction of the Church of Rome to that of Constantinople, placing the island within the eastern branch of the Church. In 826 AD, Euphemius was the Byzantine commander in Sicily.
