Athelstan is already dead!
Floki kill him.
I think Ragnar is going to use the cross, athelstan's things and his knowledge to pretend to be a priest to get into Paris. Remember that story about a viking who tricked a gated city to let him in, only to open the gates himself for the raiding party? I think Ragnar is doing to do some deceptions shit. Maybe even take the name "Athelstan" for this character, hence asking for forgivness.
^ OOOOOOOOOOOO, that's a good guess I hope is true...
Oh, Ragnar will see Paris! ...and teach Björn yet another lesson (the first was how to Blood Eagle someone) he will need later when raiding he Mediterranean as mentioned above.
I thought he wanted forgiveness for wearing the cross as a pagan and for wearing it in battle. He may have wanted to wear it to feel close to Athelstan. I'm not familiar with the story of a viking using trickery to enter the gates to Paris but that would be interesting. Although, I don't think Ragnor has enough knowledge to fake being a priest.
