Yol (or jól) is a pagan season of feast, celebrating the coming of new year and the sun's return. It takes place during midwinter, about the same time as christians celebrate christmas. It involves burning a yulelog, sacrifices and toast to Odin for victory in war, Freyr and Njord for harvest and peace and a third for the king. Toast where also made in memory of lost kinsmen.
